16.20 Presentation of Prizes/Information regarding transportation/evening activities.

There were seven twenty-minute Lecture presentations which included question and answers. In addition there were a large number of Poster presentations The judges agreed that all presentation of lectures and posters were of a high standard. These came from a wide range of UK universities. Many involved industrial collaboration and demonstrated a healthy community of young workers. These amply met the aims of the awards and effectively celebrated the work of A E Martin and H A Willis.

The first prize for the lecture was awarded to:

Chris Sammon, Sheffield Hallam University. The Diffusion of Water into PET Followed In-Situ using FTIR-ATR.

Two second prizes were jointly awarded to

Caroline Rodger. Strathclyde University, The development of Surface-Enhanced Resonance Raman Spectroscopy (SERRS) as a Sensitive and Selective Analytical Tool

Howard Sands, Leeds University UV Resonance Raman Investigations of Genetic Material.

The Poster first prize was awarded to:

Frank Sowry, University of East Anglia Resonance Raman Spectroscopy of Dinuclear Transition Metal Carbonyls in Solution.

Two joint second prrizes were awarded to

Lawrence Abbot, University of York Structural Distortions arising from Spin Frustration in Metal Cluster Complexes

Nicola Russell, Bradford University. Raman Microscopy and SEM X-Ray Studies of Antarctic Cryptoendolithic Communities.

Thanks are offered to Instruments S. A. and Renishaw for sponsoring the lecture and poster presentations respectively. Those who attended the Prize meeting largely stayed on for the 150 th IRDG Meeting on the next day at the Glaxo Welcome Medicines Research Centre, Stevenage. The IRDG arranged a successful evening at "The Three Horseshoes" at which the winners could celebrate their successes. Further prizes were secured in the local pub quiz by demonstrating knowledge beyond the optical confides of the eletromagnetic spectrum. The organisers are confident that the event will proceed to further success with further support from members, research students and sponsors.
